Barton Springs Circa 1910:
'Just Lock It Up When You Go'

Picture of Alberta McKnight in her home
in her South Austin home

Alberta McKnight, born in 1904, has lived a good part of her life in the South Austin home her father built. Mrs. McKnight holds a master's degree in education and science and worked as a high school teacher in Fort Worth for 14 years.

Ms. McKnight:
"My father knew A. J. Zilker. Daddy would ask him if we could go out to those springs and have a picnic, and Mr. Zilker would say, 'Why yes, go on out there to the caretaker's house and get the key. Just lock it up when you go.'

I remember we had a surrey with fringe on the top. We'd ride out there in it and spend the day. They had a fence around the pool. It was real deep, and you could see the fish swimming. People say they've caught some mighty big fish out of there, but you know how it is; a fisherman and his tale make a good-sized story. Anyway, I couldn't swim across the deepest part then because I was only six and it was dangerous. . . "
